Warning: This post contains minor spoilers for The Mandalorian Season 1 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

It’s finally happened. According to recent reports, Rosario Dawson will be playing the live-action version of Ahsoka Tano in the second season of The Mandalorian. If true, this news is the joint fulfillment of two different fandom dreams: the graduation of fan-favorite character Ahsoka Tano from animation to live-action, and the casting of geek-icon Rosario Dawson in the role.

Although Dawson has had a long career appearing in multiple successful films, in recent years, she has become especially popular with geek fandoms after playing Claire Temple in the beloved Marvel-Netflix series Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. She also voiced Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl, in The Lego Batman Movie and is the go-to voice actor for Wonder Woman in DC’s current slate of animated movies, most recently starring in Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. Her reported new role in the Star Wars universe will only further cement her popularity.

Ahsoka Tano’s initial appearances in The Clone Wars movie and subsequent television series were divisive among the Star Wars fanbase, but Anakin’s feisty young Padawan has since grown to become one of the franchise’s most beloved characters. She's gone on to appear in Star Wars: Rebels and even starred in her very own novel.

Dawson’s casting as Ahsoka is a welcome example of the positive aspects of both fandom and digital media as it is the culmination of nearly three years of tweeting, petitioning and wishing on the parts of both fans and the actor alike. Dawson has been vocal about her interest in the role as far back as a 2017 interview with Good Morning America in which she mentioned fans' online campaign to get her cast as Ahsoka.

Host Michael Strahan pointed out that the official Star Wars Twitter account follows her on the platform, and that they only follow the actors who appear in their movies. Both Dawson and fans took this as an early, hopeful sign, and the actor ended her interview by crossing both fingers and pleading, "Internet, help me out!"

Fans did exactly that, going so far as to create petitions and start rumors of her appearing in every live-action Star Wars project since. They speculated that she would make an appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. When that didn’t happen, they hoped she would appear in the final installment of the Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker. That hope wasn't completely unfulfilled, as Ahsoka's voice, provided by her Rebels and Clone Wars voice actor, Ashley Eckstein, was briefly heard in the film.

The massive success of The Mandalorian on new streaming service Disney+ lit fans’ hope anew for a live-action version of the character played by Dawson. One fan even took to Twitter to point out that Ahsoka would be almost exactly the same age as Dawson during the time frame of Jon Favreau’s hit series. This was retweeted by the actor in mid-January, confirmation that she would be more than willing to play the character in the series.

Now, according to a report from /Film, this long-held dream is finally a reality. Although neither Disney nor Dawson have officially commented on the report, the casting has been confirmed by two independent sources.

The news is fancasting made real. After three years of grassroots fan support, it seems Disney heard and listened to fans. This is a rewarding moment for the Star Wars fandom and a welcome change of pace from the infamous controversies of years past. Although the world is still eagerly awaiting word from Disney that this hope truly is a reality, fans can take a moment to enjoy their success and begin eagerly speculating just what role Ahsoka will play in the plot of The Mandalorian Season 2 and beyond.

Ahsoka Tano can currently be seen in the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, streaming now on Disney + and starring Matt Lanter as Anakin Skywalker, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano, Dee Bradley Baker as Captain Rex and the clone troopers, James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan and Sam Witwer as Maul. A new episode arrives each Friday.

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito and Emily Swallow. Season 1 is streaming now on Disney+. Season 2 is slated to arrive this October.
