One of the stars of the upcoming The Last of Us TV show says HBO's adaptation will stay true to the original game's atmosphere while retaining its uniqueness.

Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, revealed the details in an interview with SheKnows. "I think people are going to love [the adaptation]. I know there were people worried about it, of course," Ramsey said, referring to the game franchise's obsessed and diehard fan base. "When something is so precious to you as a viewer — as a gamer — of course, you're going to be worried about the adaptation."

The actor then continued, stating the show would help bring a new perspective to the franchise. "But honestly, I think people are going to love it. It very much follows the emotional beats of the game, and it's very respectful of the game and honors the game," she continued. "But [the live-action series adaptation] brings a new life into it. It explores different avenues that weren't explored so much in the game. I do think people are going to love it. I hope they do. It was so much fun to make, such an experience. I hope that [audiences] feel that experience too when they come on the adventure with us."

Little has been known about HBO's adaptation ever since the series' greenlight in late 2020. However, what is known is that it has wrapped up production and will feature familiar locations from the game while also bringing a brand-new storyline written by Naughty Dog Co-President Neil Druckmann to the exploits of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie. The first season will consist of 10 episodes and is expected to feature appearances from Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, the voice actors for Joel and Ellie in the games.

The Last of Us is an action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and initially released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3. The game's plot follows professional smuggler Joel Miller as he escorts young survivor Ellie Williams to a far-away location for mysterious reasons while trying to avoid both the undead and alive. The game was released to universal acclaim, selling over 1.3 million copies on launch week and creating a community of diehard fans who consider The Last of Us to be one of the best games of all time. This popularity has culminated in the creation of a full-on franchise that has included a popular sequel, an upcoming remake of the original game and, of course, the highly anticipated TV show.

HBO's TV adaptation of The Last of Us is slated to premiere in early 2023.
