The Hunger Games Midnight Haul on Par With Latest Twilight

If there were any questions as to whether Lionsgate had a hit on its hands with director Gary Ross’ adaptation of The Hunger Games, they were answered by nationwide midnight screenings. According to Variety, the film made anywhere between $20 million and $30 million last night, which already puts it just short of 21 Jump Street‘s weekend-winning $35 million.

Although the midnight numbers might reach Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1‘s $30.3 million, analysts are quick to point out that the vampire romance came out during Thanksgiving, which gives the target audience of tweens and teens a larger window in which to watch the film. Still, we’ll have to wait and see how things shake out.

The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian future where teenagers are chosen to compete to the death in a giant outdoor arena controlled by the government. The star of the story is a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen (played by Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence), who falls for fellow combatant, or Tribute, as the books refer to them, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson).
