No, this isn’t a poster for The Muppets 2: They Got Hairier. Instead, it’s the latest poster for the upcoming release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
We already saw a one-sheet introducing us to Martin Freeman’s Bilbo Baggins, and that image drew clear inspiration from the previous posters for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. If Bilbo’s poster was meant to hearken back to the dramatic, action-packed elements of The Lord of the Rings, then this image is meant to show something much lighter. The similarity to The Muppets poster might not have been intentional (after all, there are only so many generic posters Hollywood can make), but at least it reminds us that The Hobbit has a lot more lightness and humor than The Lord of the Rings did.
Peter Jackson posted the new photo to his Facebook page. The poster features Dwarves Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Thorin Oakenshield, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori and Ori. Bilbo acts as a companion to the 13 dwarves during their journey to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will kick things off on Dec. 14, followed by The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on Dec. 13, 2013 and The Hobbit: There and Back Again on July 18, 2014.
This new trilogy from The Lord of the Rings director stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Cate Blancett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom and Andy Serkis, who also appeared in the previous trilogy.
