Within a matter of a day, "Star War: The Force Awakens" leaped from the 10th highest-grossing film of all time to the ninth, unseating "Iron Man 3" with a $1.228 billion worldwide haul. And there's no sign it will slow its ascent anytime soon.

With Tuesday's receipts now counted, the Disney sequel has crossed $600 million in the North American box office, faster than any other film in history. By all indications, it should pass the $700 million mark this weekend, placing "Avatar's" record $760.5 million domestic total within grasp.

"The Force Awakens" raked in another $29.5 million domestically on Tuesday (a drop of just 4 percent from Monday), bringing its North American total to $600.9 million. Overseas, it earned an additional $37.7 million, bringing its international tally to $627.4 million.

That $1.228 billion haul puts "The Force Awakens" to slip past Disney's "Frozen" ($1.276 billion) in the next day or two to become the eighth highest-grossing film of all time. Then "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2" better watch its back.
