Last September, it was reported that The CW planned to produce “Amazon,” a “Wonder Woman” origin story in the same vein as “Smallville.” While developments trickled through in the months following the announcement, such as a casting breakdown for Wonder Woman and confirmation of the show’s setting, during the network’s January pilot announcements for the 2013-2014 season, “Amazon” was nowhere to be seen. After today’s CW upfront presentation also contained a lack of “Amazon,” Entertainment Weekly reports the show still has a shot at air — just not for the 2013-2014 season. CW President Mark Pedowitz confirmed to reporters after the presentation that “Amazon” is still alive.
“It’s being redeveloped,” Pedowitz told reporters. “We don’t want to produce something [that doesn’t do the franchise justice.] It’s the trickiest of all DC characters.” The CW head went on to note that while “Amazon” had “the basics” in the initial development, the execution was lacking.
When initially announced, “Young Avengers” co-creator and “Grey’s Anatomy” screenwriter Allan Heinberg was on board to write “Amazon,” but with the project undergoing redevelopment, it’s unknown whether Heinberg will still be involved. Heinberg also helped re-launch “Wonder Woman” for DC Comics in 2006.
