The reworked film reboot of The Crow has officially found a director -- and a lead actor.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bill Skarsgård (It, Deadpool 2) will star as main protagonist Eric Draven in the upcoming reboot of The Crow, which is set to be directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman, Ghost in the Shell) from a script by Zach Baylin (King Richard). Edward R. Pressman and Malcolm Gray are producing the film.

THR explains that the Crow reboot is "well into preproduction ahead of a June start date, with shooting to take place in Prague and Munich." The film's budget is said to be around $50 million.

The Crow began life as a comic book series created by writer/artist James O'Barr in 1989. A now-infamous feature film adaptation directed by Alex Proyas and starring the late Brandon Lee hit theaters in 1994. Proyas' The Crow was a sleeper hit at the box office and has since become a cult-favorite. It was followed up by three sequels: The Crow: City of Angels (1996), The Crow: Salvation (2000) and The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005). There was also the television series The Crow: Stairway to Heaven, which ran for a single season from 1998 to 1999.

Previously, a Crow reboot titled The Crow Reborn was to be produced by Davis Films, Highland Film Group and Electric Shadow and distributed by Sony Pictures. The film was to be directed by The Nun's Corin Hardy and would have starred Aquaman's Jason Momoa in the lead role of Eric Draven. It was slated for release on Oct. 11, 2019. However, The Crow Reborn never came to be, with Momoa and Hardy abruptly departing the project in 2018 and Sony pulling the film from its release schedule. Test footage featuring Momoa as Eric Draven eventually surfaced online in 2021.

Despite the Momoa-led attempt seemingly falling through, Bloody Disgusting reported in early 2020 that the reboot of The Crow was back in active development. It was radio silent on that front for a time, but earlier this year, the aforementioned Pressman confirmed to IndieWire that while Hardy and Momoa's film had been canceled, a new Crow reboot was in the works, with a new director and star to be announced. This brings us to today's news of Sanders and Skarsgård's involvement.

The Swedish-born Skarsgård is perhaps best known for his role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 2017 film reboot of Stephen King's It and its 2019 sequel, It Chapter Two. He is also no stranger to comic book adaptations, having portrayed Axel Cluney/Zeitgeist in the 2018 X-Men spinoff film Deadpool 2 and Kro in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals.
