Although The Avengers doesn’t premiere in North America for another week, Marvel’s ensemble action film already rattling the international box office, assembling the second-highest opening of all time in Australia behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2.
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes grossed $6.2 million on Wednesday, 233 percent ahead of Iron Man, giving both Marvel and parent company Disney their biggest-ever opening day in Australia. To those figures The Hollywood Reporter adds $800,000 from New Zealand, $1.2 million from Taiwan — marking the best opening days ever for both — and $3 million from France.
The Joss Whedon-directed feature blazes into another 42 foreign markets over the weekend before opening May 4 in the United States and Canada, where it’s expected to gross more than $150 million in its first frame.
