“The Avengers” Continue To Smash Records, Takes In $207 Million In North American Opening Weekend

If Loki’s army couldn’t stop the Avengers, what chance did the North American box office have?

After a better-than-expected Sunday, Marvel’s “The Avengers” is projected to finish the weekend with $207.1 million, $6.8 million more than the earlier estimate that was more than enough to give the Joss Whedon-directed film the biggest three-day domestic debut of all time. Final figures won’t be available until later today.

That crown previously belonged to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2,” which debuted last summer to $169.2 million, breaking the $158.4 million record established in 2008 by “The Dark Knight.” Even when adjusted for inflation, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes outpaced Batman by some $38.3 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The Avengers” has grossed $441.5 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to an estimated $648 million in just 12 days. That’s more than the lifetime totals of “Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2” — until this weekend, the 2010 film was Marvel’s top grossing release with $624 million — “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

“The Avengers” stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd as Dr. Selvig.
