The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Tests Four Actors For Harry Osborn Role

Sony Pictures is reportedly zeroing in on an actor to play Peter Parker’s best friend turned worst enemy in the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, studio insiders say four young actors tested for the role on Monday: Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Snow White & the Huntsman); Eddie Redmayne (The Good Shepherd, My Week with Marilyn); Douglas Booth (Noah, Christopher and His Kind); and Boyd Holbrook (Hatfields & McCoys, The Host).

There’s no mention of the actors named in the trade paper’s previous report — Brady Corbet, Dane DeHaan and Alden Ehrenreich — so it’s unclear whether they didn’t make the cut or simply didn’t test this week. Also in question is what exactly the studio is looking for: That earlier story contended producers had changed gears, moving from a bigger, athletic actor to someone “dark and edgy.” Now it appears they want “actors with characteristics that include athleticism and good looks.”

Director Marc Webb and returning stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will be joined in the sequel by Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson and, it looks like, Jamie Foxx as Electro. Written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner based on a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, is believed to be based on — or at least build toward — Marvel’s watershed 1973 storyline “The Night Gwen Stacy Died.”

Expected to begin production in February, the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.
