It’s been a long time coming for Telltale Games’ “Fables” video game. Originally announced in 2011 alongside “The Walking Dead” game, the game based on Bill Willingham’s long-running DC Comics series (under the publisher’s Vertigo Comics imprint) about fictional characters had a brief update in February, when Telltale CEO Dan Connors teased that the game wouldn’t actually be called “Fables.” However, new developments have come to light via IGN, which broke the title and focus of Telltale’s upcoming adventure game.
Titled “The Wolves Among Us,” Telltale’s take on “Fables” puts players in control of Bigby Wolf prior to the start of Willingham’s series. Exiled to New York City, Bigby is tasked with keeping the Fables undetected in the mundane or “mundy” world.
“Developing ‘The Wolf Among Us’ based on the Fables universe has allowed our studio to build upon all of the hallmarks of what makes our episodic series so engaging for players,” Telltale CEO Dan Connors told IGN. “Through an evolution of our approach to choice and consequence, we can further explore the complexity of each and every iconic character in a universe rich with untold history from the darkest sides of the storybooks.”
Telltale’s “Fables” game has been highly anticipated ever since the studio published its “The Walking Dead” episodic game, which garnered critical acclaim for its attention to detail and faithfulness to the spirit of the comics. While “The Wolf Among Us” hasn’t yet been officially confirmed as part of “Fables” canon, Willingham has a history of going to other forms of media to expand the series’ lore, including the prose novel “Peter and Max.” It seems likely due to both the setting of the game and Telltale’s proven track record with keeping “The Walking Dead” in-continuity that “The Wolf Among Us” will be canon for “Fables.”
“The Wolf Among Us” arrives summer 2013 for Xbox 360, PC, Mac and PlayStation 3.
