SyFy's "12 Monkeys" pilot order has been upgraded to a full series. According to Variety, the network has ordered an additional 12 episodes of the series, which is produced by Universal Cable Prods. and Atlas Entertainment.

Based on the Terry Gilliam film of the same name, 12 Monkeys stars Aaron Stanford (X-Men 2's Pyro, Nikita), Noah Bean (Nikita, Damages), Amanda Schull (Suits, Pretty Little Liars) and Kirk Acevedo (Fringe, Oz).

Like the film, it follows the journey of a time traveler from a post-apocalyptic future (Stanford) who heads to the present to stop a plague that will eventually decimate the human race. Based on Chris Marker's 1962 short film La Jetée, Gilliam's film starred Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt and Madeleine Stowe and was released in 1995. Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven, who produced the original film, and Richard Suckle will serve as executive producers. Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett wrote the pilot and will serve as co-executive producers, with Natalie Chaidez as executive producer and showrunner. Jeffrey Reiner directed the pilot and was also executive producer.

It's set to debut next January.
