In the thrilling Season 2 trailer for Superman & Lois, one of the scariest things was seeing Tyler Hoechlin's Clark Kent seemingly losing control of his powers, or even worse yet, being weakened in the field. It's why his powered-up son, Jordan, is begging to watch his back on various missions, leaving fans wondering what's really happening to the hero. Upon closer inspection, though, it seems that this series may indeed be a dark remix of All-Star Superman, which is ironically deemed as one of the most virtuous stories ever.

That 2005 book from Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely, Jamie Grant, Phil Balsman and Travis Lanham truly painted an inspirational story where Kal-El got poisoned due to Lex Luthor's solar radiation scheme. He essentially got cancer, giving him a year to live with some of his powers being augmented, while new ones came to light such as being able to project his essence.

Eventually, however, Superman would 'die,' going into the sun to spend the rest of his days, and it looks like another similar emotional story is being painted in this show with Clark perhaps being the victim of cosmic poisoning. We must remember when Tal-Rho became the Eradicator in the tail-end of last season, he tried to expel Kryptonian energy and get their souls to possess Earthlings. Luckily, Kal managed to hold his brother down in the energy bubble, which allowed Steel to knock Tal out with the hammer and enable Kal to triumph.

It may well be that we're seeing the after-effects of the energy altering Superman's cells, causing his powers to go on the fritz. It could even end with him facing a terminal death too, which would fit the show's theme of legacy and the mantle being handed down in the wake of death. But while All-Star Superman focused on Clark doing good through a bevy of heroic quests, Superman & Lois might deal with something much more tragic and how Kal can't accept his fate.

The show might not be about Superman going on a final romantic hurrah with Lois per the comic, but more about Kal trying to embrace loss for his family and a different kind of love for his boys that would be ripped away too soon. This cancer could even make Kal evil, as he was possessed by Zod last season, with fans wondering if there are remnants of the villain in Superman's mind.

It's the kind of thing that could break Superman as he wouldn't want to leave his loved ones behind, connecting to his marital problems and how he's fighting with Lois. That way, rather than an uplifting journey where Superman rises above and lives his last days happily, the show may well make the last days more heartbreaking. It'd be more cerebral seeing Kal not understanding acceptance and struggling with a wife and the boys who'd fail to deal with losing the man they thought would be around forever.

Superman & Lois Season 2 premieres Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
