As the premier news agency in the DC Universe, The Daily Planet has been rocked by some incredibly major news linked to its high-profile personnel over the past several months. From one of its most prominent reporters revealing himself to be Superman, another being exposed as Metropolis' latest supervillain Red Cloud and  scandals linked to its owner, the venerable newspaper has made as many shocking headlines as its reported.

But as The Daily Planet moves past its latest scandal in Action Comics #1027, the company gains a familiar face as its latest owner: Jimmy Olsen.

Superman Jimmy Olsen Daily Planet Owner

Olsen's new role as The Daily Planet's owner could give it some much-needed stability for the first time in a decade. Historically, The Daily Planet has most often been owned by Morgan Edge, a media mogul introduced by Jack Kirby in 1970's Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #133. While he originally expanded The Daily Planet's news media empire into television, Edge was a relatively upstanding figure, but he was reimagined as a more antagonistic character following Crisis on Infinite Earths, who obsessed with gaining ratings and readership through unscrupulous reporting before being revealed to be linked to the criminal organization Intergang.

Subsequent owners included Lex Luthor, who attempted to shut the newspaper down for its unfavorable coverage of him, and Perry White, its longtime editor-in-chief. Prior to the events of Flashpoint, Bruce Wayne even acquired The Daily Planet and was shown to have a friendly relationship with most of its staff, including White. However, this was retconned during the New 52, with Lex Luthor established as the owner once again moving into the DC Rebirth era before it was sold to Marisol Leone, who was secretly the head of the new crime syndicate the Invisible Mafia. Luthor gave Lois Lane the information behind Leone's true nature, knowing it would directly jeopardize her and Clark Kent's jobs, but that they were both morally obligated to report it anyway.

True to Luthor's predictions, The Daily Planet seemed on the verge of a complete shutdown after its owner was outed as a powerful mobster while one of its most prominent new reporters, Robinson Goode, was exposed as the murderous supervillain Red Cloud, who was working for Leone. Fortunately for the news organization, Jimmy Olsen recently learned he was related to Luthor and gained access to the Luthor family trust fund. By blackmailing his newfound relative, Olsen forced him to fund The Daily Planet in perpetuity to keep the latest round of incriminating evidence secret. Luthor installed Jimmy himself as the true chief of The Daily Planet and ensured that all of his co-workers would be able to retain their jobs after outsmarting the longtime Superman nemesis.

For years, Jimmy Olsen had been relegated to gathering drink orders for his more senior co-workers and was constantly berated by Perry White for his work performance. Now, it's clear that Jimmy will become a hands-on owner, and his wacky ideas may directly affect how the news organization is run. But still, the paper is now out of Lex Luthor and Marisol Leone's hands and run by someone that the staff can trust.

Of course, the move made Jimmy a mortal enemy of one of the most powerful supervillains in the DCU. But with the power of the press and Superman by his side, Jimmy has quietly become one of the more well-connected characters in Metropolis.
