SPOILER WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Supergirl," "Welcome to Earth."

There comes a time in every show-based-on-a-comic-book's life when they get to surprise one group of fans and not the other. For "Supergirl," tonight was that night, as it delivered a last-minute cliffhanger -- an October surprise, if you will -- that will undoubtedly surprise fans who've not spent much time with these characters on the page. The big twist? M'gann M'orzz (Sharol Leal) may be "The Last Daughter of Mars," but she's not a Green Martian --she's a White Martian.

This won't be news to comic readers, who likely remember the complicated background of M'gann (a.k.a. Miss Martian). The show seems to tease what it's take on the Miss Martian story may be, as M'gann credits her escape from an internment camp to a female White Martian who refused a kill order, saying she was different from the others. It seems like simple backstory in the moment, but given that M'gann reveals her true form (to no one but her mirror) in the episode's closing moments, it's possible that the compassionate being she describes is actually herself.
