Another Supergirl series regular is set to take on a recurring role in the show's third season.

In a surprising move, fan-favorite actress Floriana Lima, who plays Maggie Sawyer on the series, will not be returning as a series regular when the show returns for its third season (via Entertainment Weekly). It was a decision made by Lima, who is currently pursuing other opportunities, and will no longer be available to appear on the series outside of a recurring role. The news comes after the season two finale of Supergirl saw the relationship between Maggie and Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) grow -- following an emotional coming out story-line with Alex -- with the latter eventually proposing. As exciting as the prospect was for fans, Maggie's response to the proposal was nothing more than a smile, and now we may have a better idea as to why that is.

Regarding Lima's decision to be demoted to a recurring role, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg was fully supportive of the actress and her decision, with Kreisberg revealing that she will at least be back for a handful of episodes. Much like Calista Flockhart’s Cat Grant who hasn't been a series regular since the show's first season.

“We adore Floriana and have loved working with her to tell this inspiring story,” Kreisberg said. “Although she’s not available to us as a series regular next season, as she’s looking to pursue other opportunities, we’re happy she’ll be returning for multiple episodes in Season 3.”

Returning Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT this fall on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers and Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, with appearances by Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.
