Add another name to the list of genre veterans appearing on The CW's "Supergirl": Kevin Sorbo has joined the show in a recurring role as a "mysterious new villain," as announced Friday by Warner Bros. Television. No further details, including when he'll first appear, have been revealed at this time -- though feel free to speculate on what villain he may portray.

"Since his days as Hercules, Kevin Sorbo has brought such a strong presence to the screen and we couldn't be more excited to have him join us on 'Supergirl,'" Andrew Kreisberg, executive producer of "Supergirl," "Arrow," "The Flash" and "Legends of Tomorrow," said in a statement.

Sorbo starred in "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" for six seasons from 1995 to 1999, and in a string of TV movies that preceded the series. The show was a major hit in syndication, and spawned the popular spinoff "Xena: Warrior Princess," along with "Young Hercules," which helped launched the career of Ryan Gosling. Sorbo later starred as Captain Dylan Hunt on the sci-fi series "Andromeda" from 2000 to 2005, with recent roles including the 2014 Christian film "God's Not Dead."

Appearing in "Supergirl" is something of a full-circle moment for Sorbo, who has disclosed in the past that the role of Superman in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" came down between him and Dean Cain, and Cain being cast cleared the path for Sorbo to take on "Hercules."

"Supergirl" marks Sorbo's highest-profile acting role in years. The actor has been the source of some controversy in his career, including his publicly stated belief that his Christian faith has hurt his career in Hollywood. He received widespread criticism in 2014 for calling protestors in Ferguson, Missouri following the shooting death of Michael Brown "losers" and "animals" in a Faceobok post. He apologized for his remarks the following day.

Sorbo is the second alum of a '90s series added to the "Supergirl" ranks this week. Teri Hatcher, who played Lois Lane on "Lois & Clark," was announced earlier this week as joining the DC Comics-based CW series in a “mysterious new role” for a multi-episode arc. (Whether or not Hatcher and Sorbo's mysterious roles are somehow related remains to be seen.) Dean Cain himself has also appeared on "Supergirl," as Kara Danvers' adoptive father Jeremiah Danvers.

Starring Melissa Benoist as the title character, "Supergirl" airs 8 p.m. Mondays on The CW.
