After reaching the $700 million milestone last weekend, "Suicide Squad" has gone on to surpass Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" at the worldwide box office.

According to Box Office Mojo, the Warner Bros. film's global tally is now $718.8 million, compared to the $714.4 million final total of 2014's "The Winter Soldier."

Sure, it's a difference of less than $5 million, but it's certainly noteworthy on a few levels. First, although "Suicide Squad's" opening last month set records for August, the David Ayer film was dogged by negative reviews, which undoubtedly contributed to a steep 66-percent box-office decline in its second weekend. By contrast, "Winter Soldier" was considered a commercial and critical success. Second, $714.4 million represents the grand total of "Winter Soldier's" theatrical run, while "Suicide Squad" is still squeezing out money in its seventh weekend of release. Third, unlike "Winter Soldier," "Suicide Squad" was never released in China, the world's second-largest film market.

Forbes observed last week that with its $314 million domestic haul, "Suicide Squad" is even "leggier" than Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War," having earned 2.3 times its $133.7 million opening weekend.

How much more steam "Suicide Squad" has in it remains to be seen. This weekend -- its seventh of U.S. release -- the film picked up an additional $4.55 million.
