The Suicide Squad may be returning to theaters sooner than expected.

Along with the news that a Harley and Joker movie is currently in development, Suicide Squad 2 has reportedly been fast-tracked in order to get out ahead of this new project. The film is currently being shopped around to potential directors.

The sequel to the 2016 film has had a rough go thus far. The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra recently passed on the film in order to direct Disney's Jungle Cruise, which stars Dwayne Johnson. Before him, a deal had been in the works with Mel Gibson, but ultimately fell through.

Along with the rest of the first film's surviving cast, Suicide Squad 2 is expected to feature the return of Jared Leto's Joker. Combine this film with the Harley and Joker movie and the recently announced Joker origin film from Martin Scorsese, and it looks like the Clown Prince of Crime will be terrorizing the big screen for quite some time.

Suicide Squad, written and directed by David Ayer, earned $745.6 million worldwide following its 2016 release. Despite its financial success and fans' positive reception to Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn, the film received negative reviews from both critics and moviegoers.

Suicide Squad 2 is expected to begin production in mid-2018 in advance of a 2019 release date, which has still yet to be finalized.
