The hunt for a Suicide Squad 2 director has finally come to an end. Variety reports that The Accountant helmer Gavin O’Connor has joined the film as writer and is in talks to direct. According to the report, WB has not closed on the directing deal with O'Connor, but it seems likely at this time.

The journey to finding a director for the Suicide Squad sequel has been a long, winding road. Back in February, Hacksaw Ridge director Mel Gibson was in talks for the job, though they never came to an agreement. The Shallows' Jaume Collet-Serra was also offered the position, though he turned it down in order to direct Disney's Jungle Cruise film. It seems as though the third time may be the charm for Warner Bros.' if talks with O’Connor prove successful.

Written and directed by David Ayer, the first Suicide Squad film earned $745.6 million worldwide following its 2016 release. Despite its financial success and fans’ positive reception to Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn, the film received negative reviews from both critics and moviegoers.

Suicide Squad 2 is expected to begin production in mid-2018 in advance of a 2019 release date, which has still yet to be finalized.
