Rumors of Robopocalypse‘s demise have been greatly exaggerated. After reports Thursday that Steven Spielberg had put the sci-fi adaptation on the backburner indefinitely, Entertainment Weekly talked to the director to clear things up a bit.
“We found that the film was costing a lot of money and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally,” he said. “I found the personal way into Robopocalypse, and so I just told everybody to go find other jobs, I’m starting on a new script and we’ll have this movie back on its feet soon.”
Spielberg was clear he’s not abandoning the project. “Not at all,” he said. “I’m working on it as we speak.”
Based on a book by Daniel H. Wilson, Robopocalypse focuses on a futuristic robot uprising. Chris Hemsworth and Anne Hathaway were in talks to star, although their involvement is obviously up in the air at this point.
