Idris Elba's Roland Deschain certainly isn't your average man in the latest television promos for Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

While previous trailers for the ambitious film adaptation have focused on tone and setting, these TV ads turn the spotlight squarely on the characters, namely Elba's Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey's Man in Black.

"For centuries," Roland tells his young ward Jake Chambers in the first promo, above, "the Gunslingers were knights, sworn to protect us from the coming of the dark. Now I'm the only one left." That pretty much sets the scene, as we see Roland in action with his twin sandalwood revolvers.

McConaughey's Man in Black gets a suitably creepy promo as well. He's a lot more mysterious, but even in his brief screen time, he radiates evil as he promises the destruction of the titular Dark Tower.

And if you didn't get enough of Roland, there's another TV spot in which Elba recites the Gunslinger oath. Fans of the books will no doubt smile at finally hearing Roalnd's mantra recited on screen. Those who are less familiar should watch with the knowledge that the guns Roland is swearing by are forged from the slagged remains of King Arthur's sword Excalibur. It's that kind of movie. "I kill with my heart," Roland promises.

Arriving July 28, The Dark Tower also stars Abbey Lee, Katheryn Winnick, Fran Kranz, Claudia Kim and Jackie Earle Haley.
