Following its exciting debut at New York Comic Con last month, fans now get to see what all the fuss is about in regards to David S. Goyer’s new Starz drama Da Vinci’s Demons.
A trailer for the upcoming first season has arrived, and it teases a stylized look into the life of Leonardo Da Vinci. Tom Riley stars as the Renaissance artist, although we’re seeing him here as we’ve never seen him before. Da Vinci’s Demons looks like it will be full of sex and intrigue, which is in keeping what we know about that time period. But it turns out that this Da Vinci is going to draw parallels to some modern day action heroes as well.
“We’re essentially positioning Da Vinci as one-third Indiana Jones, one-third Sherlock Holmes, one-third kind of Tony Stark, so it’s Da Vinci when he’s 27 in Europe,” Goyer told Spinoff and other journalists at NYCC. “A lot of people think of Da Vinci as the guy who did the self-portrait, and then people think he did the Mona Lisa and Last Supper, but the truth is he was known to be a really good swordsman, he was ambidextrous, he could fight with both hands, he was known to be a really good writer, he had a reputation for having a really big mouth. He was thrown in jail a bunch of times, he had a reputation for fighting, and most of his life he was living as a war engineer, not as an artist.”
Riley talked about how his portrayal of the famous historical figure has changed based on what the audience knows about him — or rather, what they don’t know about him.
“We’re trying to say what would a guy who’s as smart as that, who could create a body of work that still exists now, what would he have been like when he was young?” he said. “Not the dry guy we know now from the now-decaying self-portrait. He must have been a guy who was alive and vibrant and challenging authority and so that’s what I’m doing.”
Da Vinci’s Demons will premiere on Starz in spring 2013.
