After pulling in more than $55 million at the box office on Thursday night, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is estimated to earn between $130 million to $145 million on Friday and $250 million to $275 million over the weekend, putting it on track to break opening-day and weekend records (via Deadline). The estimates, which include Thursday’s haul, push the latest “Star Wars” film past current record-holder “Jurassic World,” which opened with $208.8 million.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” pulled in an estimated $55 million to $57 million in Thursday-night previews across North America, breaking the $43.5 million record set in 2011 by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” That figure could rise as high as $60 million by the time an official tally is released this morning.
Directed by J.J. Abrams, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” stars franchise veterans Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker, joined by newcomers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie and Max von Sydow. The film is now playing in theaters.
