WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #13, Star Wars: The High Republic: Trail of Shadows #5, and Star Wars: The High Republic: Midnight Horizon, on sale now.

While the series has featured some impressive action sequences, for the most part, Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures focused more on developing the younger generation of Jedi knights during the High Republic era. The series focused on how its main Padawans explored their own role within the Force and within the Jedi Order.

The creators of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures ended the series seemingly moments before the disaster on the triumphant note of Qort and Farzala Tarabal's knighting ceremony. In doing so, they allowed the series to tell a complete story and maintained the hopeful and heartwarming tone established throughout Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures run.

Lula Talisola, Farzala Tarabal and Qort's growth as young Jedi was the main focus of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #13 by Daniel José Older, Harvey Tolibao of Magnus Arts, Rebecca Nalty, Jake M. Wood, Riley Farmer and Heather Antos. For Lula, growth and coming of age meant accepting her romantic feelings for Zeen Mrala and delaying her knighting until she figured out her romance and her future. For Farzala and Qort, their journey seemed more conventional by ending with a knighting ceremony. The series' main characters embraced these changes while fully supporting each other in their growth.

This ending encapsulated the tone set throughout Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures. Older's writing worked in conjunction with the art of Harvey Tolibao, Pow Rodrix, Manuel Bracchi, Toni Bruno and Jo Geyong to show the Jedi Order at its best as a warm, welcoming environment that encouraged and supported young Jedi's journeys as they explored their abilities and their place within the Force. Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures ultimately shows why the Jedi Order of the High Republic was worth preserving.

However, this hopeful ending was bittersweet because it took place right before the destruction of the Starlight Beacon. While many of the young Jedi escaped, some, like Lula and Farzala, were among the missing, as revealed in Daniel José Older's Star Wars: The High Republic: Midnight Horizon. In the novel, Zeen Mrala vowed to team up with Qort and search for Lula, Farzala and the other Jedi who were lost. Qort's survival later was expanded upon, and he even managed to strike one of the Jedi's first blows against the Great Leveler in Star Wars: The High Republic Trail of Shadows #5 by Daniel José Older, David Wachter, Giada Marchisio, VC's Joe Sabino, David Lopez, David Baldeón, Israel Silva and Carlos Lao. These other works left many characters' survival from Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures uncertain. Readers may not get answers about their fates until Phase III of the subseries since Phase II will take place earlier in the High Republic era.

The decision not to include the station's destruction was the right one for the series. Throughout the series, the focus has been on the Jedi Order as a warm, loving environment for children to grow up in, and the series ends with that environment still intact. Also, the series has shown Lula Talisola, Farzala Tarabal, Qort and Zeen Mrala's coming of age, and the knighting ceremony, as well as Lula's decision not to be knighted, shows the culmination of the characters' arcs throughout their adventures. On a meta-level, choosing to end the series before the disaster means Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures' run at IDW Publishing does not end on a cliffhanger. Instead, the series can be read as a complete story and one of Star Wars' best depictions of life as a Padawan in the Jedi Order.

Ultimately, Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures was a celebration of the Jedi Order at its best for readers of all ages within the Star Wars fandom. The series was more character-based and focused on Lula, Farzala and Qort's coming of age. The series showed that growing up can look different for everyone through their stories. Therefore, the ending of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures was perfect for the series, even if other works in Wave Three of the Star Wars: The High Republic subseries show that some of the characters' fates are not currently known.
