‘Star Wars’ Rumors: ‘Gigantic Role’ For Harrison Ford, Oscar Isaac Joins Race?

With the first table read for Star Wars: Episode VII reportedly being held today in London, it would seem like an official casting announcement is imminent. (Could J.J. Abrams & Co. be waiting until Sunday, May 4 … Star Wars Day?) Until then, fans will have to be satisfied with even more rumors about potential new additions to the franchise, and the possibility of an expanded role for a familiar face.

According to Deadline, Harrison Ford is said to have “a gigantic role” in Episode VII, which only makes more confusing the reports of a shift in focus between the script by Michael Arndt and the rewrite by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan. Arndt’s draft is believed to have focused on the children of Han Solo and Princess Leia, with original-trilogy stars Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill presumably appearing to pass the torch to the next generation. However, it was suggested just last month that the new script moves the offspring and, one would think, their parents, into supporting roles.

The list of reported contenders for the coveted lead roles has been long, and mercurial, but the website states that Inside Llewyn Davis star Oscar Isaac is now in the running for a big part, along with Oxford-trained child actress Maisie Richardson-Sellers. Attack the Block star John Boyega and Adam Driver (Girls) also are still rumored to be up for roles.

Star Wars: Episode VII opens Dec. 18, 2015.
