Previously unseen before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the First Order's new Treaderspeeders were a noticeable addition to the Star Wars universe. Now, their backstory in the film has been revealed.

The new vehicle's entry in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary reveals that the First Order designed the Treadspeeders for its scouting expeditions on the "harsh, untamed" planets within the Unknown Regions.

Due to their use of anti-repulsorlift technology, the Treadspeeders are stated to have great military value to the First Order, which saw fit to create vehicles immune to their own high-yield repulsor-jamming technology should it ever be used against them.

The Treadspeeder is described as a "hybrid design," featuring a continuous track impeller that drives it and the jamming-resistant repulsorlifts that serve as secondary systems designed to assist in maneuvers and stability.

A visual depiction of the vehicle also notes other features, including synthetic fabric, a shape-retaining seat cushion, a chiller insulator that protects the seat from the vehicle's thrusters and an Aratech thruster combustion chamber.
