"Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "The Martian," "Inside Out," "Game of Thrones" and "Mr. Robot" were among the honorees named in the 16th annual AFI Awards. According to Variety, the awards -- which are usually announced in the first week of December -- were pushed back in order to include the latest "Star Wars" film. Over the past few years, several films that received this award  went on to receive Oscar wins.

According to AFI, the awards are delegated to works that are "deemed culturally and artistically representative of the year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image... [and]... advance the art of the moving image, enhance the rich cultural heritage of America’s art form, inspire audiences and artists alike, and/or make a mark on American society."
