Director Rian Johnson's spoiler warning ahead of the release of the new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi created some confusion among fans, who questioned whether the footage might reveal more about the sequel than they bargained for. Thankfully, the filmmaker has since shared some insight on the inner-workings of Lucasfilm -- specifically how the studio determines what details are acceptable to reveal in marketing materials.

“A year ago, maybe even more than that, my producer Ram [Bergman] and I sat down with the folks at Lucasfilm and said, ‘OK, this is what we’re going to reveal here and there, and this stuff we’re never going to reveal until the movie comes out,’" Johnson explained to Yahoo Movies. "We came up with a ‘no-fly list’ of, under no circumstances is this shown or that shown. It is a fascinating process. It’s something that for me, just having been a fan my whole life, suddenly being behind the curtain and seeing how it works and seeing how deliberate it is, has been really fascinating.”

The new trailer certainly doesn't shy away from potentially major reveals about the narrative direction of The Last Jedi. However, it's likely that, that thanks to clever editing, some of the moments that rattled fans are nothing more than red herrings.
