A fan film expands on the ancient history introduced in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Specifically, the mysterious past of Darth Malak, the BioWare game's Dark Lord of the Sith.

Titled Malak: An Old Republic Story, the five-minute film sees the Sith Lord take on his master, Revan, as Sith customs demand. But Malak proves the lesser warrior and loses his jaw, necessitating his signature mouthpiece. The clip was created using the Unreal Engine and written by Scott Anderson. Revan and Malak, along with familiar faces such as Admiral Saul Karath, appear in the film through motion-capture performances talented voice actors.

Malak, once known as Alek, was introduced in the 2003 RPG Knights of the Old Republic. It was revealed that he was once a companion of Darth Revan while they were still Jedi. Their path toward the dark side began during the Mandalorian Wars, when -- against the Council's wishes -- Revan and Malak led a number of Jedi into battle to defend the galaxy from the Mandalorian conquest. In the aftermath, they followed the trail of Sith influence into the unknown regions of space. When they returned, they had fallen to the dark side and went about attacking the Republic, beginning the Jedi Civil War. In the end, Revan fell, allowing Malak to rise as the new Dark Lord of the Sith.

Both Malak and Revan are set to return in the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, which was announced at the PlayStation Showcase in 2021 with a brief clip teasing both Revan and the return of Bastila Shan, with original voice actor Jennifer Hale reprising the role. Few details have been announced, but leaks suggest the game will do away with turn-based combat and instead feature mechanics comparable to God of War and Nioh.

In addition, recent rumors have also suggested that multiple projects related to Knights of the Old Republic are in development. BioWare and developer EA are not involved with the project. It is currently unknown which developer is attached. It's worth noting that these have not been officially confirmed.

Beyond the KOTOR series and upcoming remake, there are virtually no Star Wars projects exploring the Old Republic era in the current canon. Instead, upcoming games continue to expand on periods of time surrounding the films. A sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is in development, taking place between the prequel trilogy and original trilogy, while a new game, Star Wars Eclipse, will expand on the most recently introduced era in the Star Wars universe -- the High Republic era.
