"With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for," Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement, "and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy."

After directing the first film in the new trilogy, Abrams served as a producer on The Last Jedi and was originally slated to work in the same capacity on Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio, who wrote the scripts for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League and Academy Award winner for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay Argo.

Trevorrow, who rose to prominence with 2012's Safety Not Guaranteed and the 2015 blockbuster Jurassic World, was reportedly let go from the sequel following conflicts with Kennedy and issues involving the script.

Lucasfilm also parted company in June with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of the Han Solo anthology film, reportedly due to their conflicts with Kennedy and longtime Star Wars writer Lawrence Kasdan.

Scheduled to hit theaters on May 24, 2019, Star Wars: Episode IX will likely star Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac.
