WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Darth Vader #1, by Greg Pak, Raffaele Ienco, Neeraj Menon and VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

Marvel's Darth Vader reboot threw fans for a loop with the revelation that Padmé Amidala's actually alive after the tragic events of Revenge of the Sith. The comic is set after The Empire Strikes Back when Vader is hunting down Luke Skywalker after cutting off his hand in Cloud City. The Sith warlord ends up on Coruscant at Padmé's quarters where they had their secret romance.

Vader discovers clues that lead him to a mysterious planet called Vendaxa, which is where he finds his former wife holding him at gunpoint. It's a truly shocking moment as we thought she died after giving birth to Luke and Leia. But, instead of this actually being Padmé -- which would be a massive retcon to the canon -- it could be that writer Greg Pak and his creative team actually brought back another hero, in the form of Padmé's handmaiden and lookalike, Sabé.

Played by Keira Knightley in The Phantom Menace, she was used as the decoy during the Trade Federation dispute with Nute Gunray's forces, as well as Darth Maul on behalf of Palpatine, who were all hunting the Naboo queen down. With aggressive negotiations in place, Padmé had to make it to the Senate in one piece to make a plea to protect her people, but this also involved forming a pact with the Gungans.

Everyone was fooled, though, by Sabé, who tricked them into thinking she was the queen. She rocked Padmé's makeup, regal garb and even had her intonations down to the point you couldn't tell them apart by look or voice. They basically felt like clones of each other. Ultimately, Sabé wasn't needed to be a decoy in the other two prequel movies as much. Padmé went on to establish her place in politics but sadly, this led to her death when Anakin succumbed to the Dark Side. Now, this reveal has us wondering if it's really Sabé', now dressed as a soldier, who has Vader staring down the barrel of a gun, not his former wife.

It'd make sense as Sabé really was a warrior who wasn't afraid of being in the line of fire. She deputized for her queen and easily got stuck into the thick of firefights so she would have the military experience at this point. One has to wonder if she could have fooled the people of Naboo after Padmé died again, and at this juncture, we're stumped if she can also trick Vader. He seems to think it's his wife but we're certain once he searches the Force to connect with her, the truth will come out.

Another possible hint that this is Sabé comes from the 2019 book from Disney and Lucasfilm, Queen's Shadow. The novel, from E. K. Johnston, is in canon and depicted Padmé's past in politics and how Sabé was like a best friend and sister to her. They shared the same mission and philosophies of peace, which is why when Padmé died, Sabé, along with an officer glimpsed briefly in Padmé's entourage in The Phantom Menace, Captain Tonra, resolved to find out how the queen perished.

They'd change their identities and investigate the untimely death, so we could easily see this "Padmé" who's now a full-blown rebel being Sabé. There would have had to be a cover-up by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Senator Bail Organa to hide the twins, so they may have been the ones to set the handmaiden on this rugged path.

Vader did find tech in Padmé's room suggesting it was bugged, and also searched for evidence, so if someone's looking at data and clearly working a case, it stands to reason it's someone close to Padmé; someone who thought there was something more sinister to her passing. Sabé fits this role to a tee, and if Vader's indeed in her sights right now, answers will be coming soon.

Darth Vader #2 goes on sale March 11.
