CBS has released the very first trailer for the network's upcoming reboot of the Star Trek television series, Star Trek: Discovery. The series takes place ten years before the events of the original show that starred William Shatner as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock.

Star Trek: Discovery follows the crew of the USS Discovery, a Starfleet vessel, as they explore worlds and cultures at the edge of known space. The trailer introduces faces old and new.

Sonequa Martin-Green will take up the mantle of first officer on the USS Discovery. Martin-Green will be accompanied by Terry Serpico, who plays a Starfleet captain; Doug Jones, who plays the alien science officer Saru; and Michelle Yeoh, the captain of the USS Shenzhou.

Judging from the trailer, interactions with familiar alien cultures will play a pivotal role in the series. At one point, the USS Discovery engages a group of Klingons, hinting that the longstanding rivalry between the alien species and the Federation will play a major role in the show. James Frain appears several times in the trailer as Sarek, a Vulcan astrophysicist and the father of Spock.
