UPDATE 11/23/16 8:00 PM ET: Michelle Yeoh will play a Starfleet captain on "Star Trek: Discovery," according to a Wednesday evening report from Deadline -- but not the captain of the titular Discovery.

Deadline reports that Yeoh will play Han Bo, captain of the "Shenzhou," a ship that will play a major role in season one of "Star Trek: Discovery." Yet the casting remains unconfirmed officially -- CBS TV Studios declined to confirm Yeoh's role when reached by Deadline, which cites unnamed sources in its article. Yeoh's casting was first made known when "Discovery" consulting producer and Star Trek veteran Nicholas Meyer mentioned she had joined the show in an interview with comingsoon.net.

Original story: CBS's upcoming streaming series "Star Trek: Discovery" has had to weather some pretty bad storms recently with the revelations that its executive producer Bryan Fuller will no-longer serve as the series' show runner and that it's launch will be delayed until May 2017.

Now, at long last, fans have something to celebrate with the welcome news that "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star Michelle Yeoh has joined its cast in an as-yet undisclosed role.

According to comingsoon.net, "Discovery" writer/producer Nicholas Meyer -- whose previous "Trek" credits include writing and directing duties on both "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" -- let it slip that “Michelle Yeoh is in ['Discovery']" during an interview about his 1979 film "Time After Time." There has already been much speculation that Yeoh will be playing the show's central role of “Number One,” the casting of which has reportedly been a source of much behind the scenes stress.

No other cast members have yet been announced and "Discovery" doesn't launch until May 2017. It looks like "Star Trek" fans will have to content themselves with the Digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD release of the latest feature film “Star Trek Beyond” for a while longer.
