We've been assured repeatedly that Idris Elba's ruthless alien commander Krall in "Star Trek Beyond" is a complex and possibly even sympathetic villain, and with this new TV spot we may finally begin to understand what that means.

While it would certainly seem to be a spoiler, the new footage shows Elba's character in human form, suggesting that Krall may not be all that alien, but rather transformed by some tragic event or purposely modified.

"The Federation do not care about us," the human Krall says in a video warning. "They abandoned this planet long ago. You'll probably never see me again, but if you do ... be ready."

Directed by Justin Lin, the film also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Sofia Boutella. "Star Trek Beyond" opens Friday nationwide.
