Earning near-universal early praise from fans and critics alike, Sony's animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gives a bear hug to its source material, with not only the use of comic book-style sound effects but also the central trope of multiple universes. But does it embrace that mainstay of modern superhero movies, the post-credits scene?

Although the technique dates back to the earliest days of cinema, such stingers -- both during and after the closing credits -- have received renewed, and widespread, popularity over the past decade due largely to Marvel Studios. Not confined to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or to superhero movies, however, the sequences have become expected from most Hollywood blockbusters, particularly those with an eye toward building a shared universe.

Sony's Spider-Man franchise has its own history of post-credits scenes, with 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming (part of the MCU), and the 2018 spinoff Venom each including at least one stinger. So, what about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse?

Yes, it has a post-credits scene. Well, two, technically.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

The first is a brief, but moving, tribute that arrives during the credits. Given that Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko both passed away this year, a nod to them shouldn't come as a surprise, or too much of a spoiler.

The second is a full-blown post-credits scene that will no doubt please fans of Marvel Comics, and of internet memes. Although it's largely played for laughs, it may very well also offer some clues as to what's to come from an Into the Spider-Verse sequel or spinoff.

Needless to say, both are well worth audiences sticking around in theaters just a little bit longer. The mad dash to the restroom or the parking lot can be postponed for just a few minutes longer (well, hopefully).

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is expected to end the three-week box office reign of Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet, with a projected $30 million domestic opening weekend. That's Sony's conservative estimate, in any case; Hollywood analysts place the debut at north of $39 million. The film is "Certified Fresh" at Rotten Tomatoes, where its critics' score stands at 98 percent.

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore, Brian Tyree Henry, Jake Johnson, Mahershala Ali, Hailee Steinfeld, Liev Schreiber, Luna Lauren Velez, Lily Tomlin, Nicolas Cage, John Mulaney and Kimiko Glenn. The film opens Friday nationwide.
