With a little help from Silver Sable, Black Cat will steal something new: the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is developing a "Spider-Man" spinoff film starring the two characters. "Thor: Ragnarok" scribe Chris Yost is also attached to pen a script based on an earlier version by Lisa Joy.

Though this as-yet-untitled "Black Cat and Silver Sable" project does not yet have a director, Sony is eyeing a fall start date for production. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are on board to produce. According to the report, this Black Cat and Silver Sable film and Sony's "Venom" movie are not spinning out of "Spider-Man: Homecoming," which releases in July; instead, these projects will draw "from the overall franchise and [are] based on Marvel's Spider-Man universe."

Interestingly, Felicia Hardy has already appeared in Sony's "Spider-Man" films. Specifically, the character -- who did not go on to become Black Cat -- was played by "Rogue One's" Felicity Jones in "Amazing Spider-Man 2." However, Jones' Hardy had a very small role as an employee at Oscorp and never leveled up into the fan-favorite thief.

Debuting in Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard's "Amazing Spider-Man" #194 in 1979, Black Cat has long been a staple of Spider-Man's corner of the Marvel Universe. Despite her being a thief, Felicia has maintained a rather flirty relationship with Spider-Man, and the two even dated off-and-on. More recently, however, she has turned against him; due to his "betrayal" in "Superior Spider-Man," Felicia took a hard line against Spidey and formed her own crime ring.

Silver Sable isn't quite as well known as Black Cat, but has existed in Spider-Man's world for almost as long. She arrived in Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz's "Amazing Spider-Man" #265 in 1985 and has worked with Spidey on multiple occasions. Since she is a mercenary, though, she has faced off against Peter Parker just as much as she's helped him. In addition to being an accomplished martial artist, Sable runs a company that targets war criminals.

The news follows on the heels of Sony's announcement for their upcoming "Venom" film, which has a projected release date of October 5, 2018. The studio confirmed that Scott Rosenberg and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s” Jeff Pinkner are on board to pen the script for "Venom," though the film does not yet have a director.
