The Infinity Saga came to a close with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, but the impact of the Infinity Stones can still be felt throughout the MCU and likely will be for years to come. Of all of the Infinity Stones, fans were exposed to the Space Stone the most, though it always appeared as the Tesseract until the big reveal in Infinity War.

There have only really been a handful of beings that have used the Space Stone, but the Stone has passed through many, many hands over its long run in the MCU. Very few even realized the type of power they held, though a few characters over the years recognized its true power and tried to use it as best they could.

18 The Ancient Asgardians

Thor home of Asgard in the MCU

The Ancient Asgardians may have been the first to use the Stone in the MCU, before hiding it away on Midgard after a great war. They are never shown using the Stone, but when it isn't on Earth, the Tesseract is usually in Odin's vault on Asgard.

It's not until World War II that humanity actually uses the Stone, but it is for nefarious purposes. As the guardian of the Stone states before his despicable murder, the Tesseract is not for the eyes of ordinary men.

17 Red Skull (& Hydra In General)

Red Skull about to be teleported by the Space Stone in Cap 1

Red Skull was the first person to find the true location of the Tesseract, which contained the Space Stone all along. Red Skull found the Tesseract in the ancient hiding place the Asgardians had left it in before immediately using it to manufacture incredible futuristic weaponry to fight the Allies, and anyone else Red Skull saw fit.

Eventually, the Red Skull did use the Stone with its intended purpose, though unbeknownst to fans at the time. At the end of the first Captain America film, the Tesseract teleports Red Skull to the faraway world of Vormir where he spends his days looking after the Soul Stone. After Red Skull's presumed passing, Hydra eventually resurfaced and managed to find the Stone and experiment with it right under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s noses.

16 S.H.I.E.L.D. & Possibly Even S.W.O.R.D. (& The S.S.R. Before S.H.I.E.L.D. Existed)

MCU Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D. & S.W.O.R.D.

The S.S.R. was the first of these three organizations to experiment with any kind of Tesseract technology. At first, it was just a trinket Steve had picked up on a rescue mission, but eventually, they were able to study full-blown weapons and other sophisticated Tesseract-powered technology. Unfortunately for the S.S.R., the Tesseract itself was lost when Steve crashed into the ice.

However, the military never stopped looking for the Tesseract (or Steve, hopefully). The Space Stone ended up in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody where additional energy and weapon experiments continued for many years. There was a brief period where it was presumably on loan to the Air Force, but with the timing of its return to S.H.I.E.L.D. it's entirely possible that S.W.O.R.D.—in its nascent stages—used some Tesseract tech to get off the ground and establish a highly advanced space station in about 25 years' time.

15 Howard Stark, But Just Barely

Tony and Howard Stark in Avengers: Endgame

Howard Stark may never have physically touched the Tesseract, but he was able to experiment on Hydra weapons back in World War II when Steve managed to swipe a glowing device powered by Tesseract technology. It's presumed that Stark led the charge on all Tesseract testing once the Tesseract had been found after the war.

Additionally, during the time heist, he hands his son the briefcase containing the Space Stone, unbeknownst to him of course. Howard does specifically mention Zola in this exchange; it's possible Zola was also secretly testing the cube for Hydra while Stark ran tests for S.H.I.E.L.D.

14 The Kree Scientist That Worked For The U.S. Air Force, Mar-Vell, AKA Wendy Lawson (& Her Appearance As The Supreme Intelligence)

Supreme Intelligence As Mar-Vell with an open mouth in MCU.

Decades After World War II, a Kree alien by the name of Mar-Vell attempted to use the Tesseract's power to develop a light-speed engine. She assumed the name of Wendy Lawson and worked for the U.S. Air Force (in secret) in an attempt to use the Tesseract to achieve her goal.

Additionally, the Supreme Intelligence takes on the appearance of Lawson at one point and picks up and carefully observes a simulated Tesseract. Assuming S.H.I.E.L.D. were the ones who found it after the war and they were who Howard Stark was working with, it's still a little fuzzy on how Mar-Vell (or the Air Force) got her hands on the Tesseract.

13 Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel

The Tesseract on Mar-Vell laboratory ship

Carol finds the Tesseract aboard Mar-Vell's secret invisible laboratory and grabs it without thinking twice, even tossing it in the air like a baseball. She proceeds to stash it away in a Happy Days lunch box before they are boarded by the evil Kree.

In addition to Carol toting the cube around, she also gained her powers from an explosion of the jet engine powered by Tesseract energy. Even with the Stones now gone, Carol remains as a physical totem representing the raw power of the Space Stone, much like Wanda is for the Mind Stone.

12 Captain Marvel's Best Friend, Maria Rambeau (& Presumably A Kree Goon)

Maria Rambeau from Captain Marvel

Maria Rambeau simply totes the Tesseract around in the Happy Days lunch box. She doesn't touch the cube directly, as she is just a mere mortal and wasn't given powers by the Space Stone like Carol was.

It's never shown on screen, but it's assumed one of the evil Kree cronies grabs the lunch box as Carol and company were briefly captured before Carol unlocked her full power. Once she escapes, Carol grabs the lunch box (after handing the Stone off) and leads the remaining Kree on a wild goose chase.

11 Goose The Flerken

Goose throwing up the Tesseract

While Goose never actually uses the Tesseract, he does manage to swallow it whole without any negative side effects. He stores it in a secret compartment/pocket dimension somewhere inside his mouth just when the team needs him most. Fury is noticeably shocked by Goose's new ability, finally understanding why Talos was so afraid of the kitty.

It's unknown how long Goose has the cube for, but he eventually coughs it up on Fury's desk like a cosmic hairball. It's assumed that from here, Fury found a happy, slimy accident on his desk and picked up the research where Howard Stark left off.

10 Nick Fury Trying To Escape With It

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in MCU during the Avengers

After years of studying the Tesseract with no issues, Fury experiences a problem when he decides to bring in outside help. Shortly after the Tesseract begins to misbehave, a portal opens in the middle of the lab, and from the other side enters Loki.

Loki begins taking over the minds of a few agents, and in the commotion, Fury tries to take off with the Stone. He puts it away and turns to escape before Loki stops him, and Hawkeye shoots him in the chest.

9 Hawkeye Briefly Holds It After Shooting Fury

Hawkeye scouts the city in The Avengers

Loki turns the minds of agents with his scepter (later revealed to contain the Mind Stone), and Hawkeye happens to be one of the unfortunate souls to fall victim to Loki's control. Unable to act on his own accord, he warns Loki that Fury is stalling for time waiting for the portal to implode on itself.

Hawkeye then proceeds to shoot Fury and grab the case containing the Tesseract. Though considering Hawkeye is more useful with a weapon, he quickly hands the case off to someone more qualified to look after it.

8 Dr. Erik Selvig, Before Going Insane From Loki's Mental Manipulation

Erik Selvig Stone Henge

Selvig's experience with the Tesseract involved top-secret experiments being performed deep underground S.H.I.E.L.D.'s facility. Fury brought Selvig in after his experience with Thor in New Mexico. However, unbeknownst to Fury, Loki had managed to infiltrate Selvig's mind, presumably through mild enchantment or with the Mind Stone scepter.

Selvig has the unfortunate honor of being the first person Loki fully turned to his side upon his arrival to Earth. However, despite being under Loki's control, Selvig had the wherewithal to include a failsafe for the space portal that cut the power from the Tesseract, just in case.

7 Thor Uses It To Return To Asgard

Thor using the tesseract to return home to Asgard

Thor handles the Space Stone when he and Loki are returning to Asgard, actually using the power of the Stone. Loki notes that Odin must have had to conjure a lot of dark magic to get Thor to Midgard with the Bifrost destroyed. With no Bifrost, Thor would have been stranded on Earth for the foreseeable future.

However, lucky for Thor, Loki was using the Tesseract in his grand scheme. Thor activates the power of the Space Stone after the Avengers apprehended Loki and defeated the Chiaturi army, teleporting himself and Loki back to Asgard for Loki to stand trial for his crimes against Midgard.

6 Loki, The God Of Mischief (& His Variant)

Loki leaving with the Tesseract in the first Loki series trailer

Loki has been using the Tesseract since at least 2012, he is one of the most frequent users of the Space Stone, and happens to be the most recent user via his Variant using it in the sensational Loki series on Disney+. Loki has used the Tesseract multiple times throughout the MCU since his failed attempt to conquer Midgard.

Even when Loki is doing good, he can't help himself when the Space Stone is involved. During his mission to resurrect Surtur to kick off Ragnarok, Loki notices the Tesseract sitting in Odin's vault and he can't help but snag it on his way to the Eternal Flame. This action eventually results in his death at the hand of Thanos. He (or his Variant rather) also, most famously, uses the Tesseract to escape the events of New York during the time heist, but it isn't without consequences.

5 Hunter B-15 & Casey From The TVA (& Probably Mobius)

Loki entering the TVA for the first time

Just after Loki escapes New York with the Tesseract, not a minute goes by before mysterious S.W.A.T.-style people appear and apprehend Loki along with his possessions, including the Tesseract. They apprehend Loki by smacking him across the face with a baton that slows his time to one-sixteenth normal speed.

The main agent, Hunter B-15, grabs the Tesseract and passes it off to the analyst, Casey, before Loki eventually breaks loose and regains the cube. However, upon realizing it doesn't work at the TVA, he concedes. Since he gave up with only Mobius in the room, it's assumed Mobius confiscated the Tesseract from Loki and gave it back to Casey.

4 Thanos Was The First One To Actually Use It As A Stone

Thanos acquiring the Space Stone in Infinity War

It's no secret that Thanos uses the Space Stone as part of his horrible Snap that wipes out half of all life, but he is also seen using the Space Stone on many occasions in order to teleport himself (and others) from one place to another. He is also the first one in the MCU, despite so many others, to actually use the Stone outside of its protective Tesseract case.

Thanos effortlessly uses the Space Stone when he and the Black Order escape the exploding Asgardian ship and when he travels seamlessly between locations such as Knowhere, Titan, and Wakanda. Had Thanos had a different dream, perhaps he could have been a worthy user of the Stones.

3 "Professor" Hulk When He Performed The Snap To Bring Everyone Back

Hulk performing a Snap in Endgame

After a brief argument with Lebowski Thor, it's decided that Hulk will be the one to attempt the Snap since he would be able to absorb some of the gamma radiation. However, even with the gamma buffer, the radiation from the Stones is more than Banner can handle.

Hopefully, the Hulk will make a full recovery, but until fans see him in She-Hulk, it's assumed he's been left crippled from his Snap. However, if future writers/directors actually pay homage to the character, his healing factor may return him to full strength before his next appearance.

2 Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, When He Performed The Snap That Wiped Out 2014 Thanos & His Forces

Tony Stark using the Nano-Gauntlet in Avengers: Endgame

After attempting to sacrifice himself in the first three Avengers films, Tony finally succeeds in sacrificing himself for the greater good of the universe. In a smoke-and-mirrors type of maneuver, Stark managed to wrestle the Infinity Stones away from Thanos using his nanotechnology.

Unfortunately for Tony, he is unable to turn into an enormous green rage monster to cushion the blow so the resulting radiation is far too much for his fragile human body to handle. He also handles the Space Stone when it's in a protective briefcase during the time heist and when adding the Stones to his nano gauntlet in the lab. Iron Man may be gone, but he left in style by being the last person in the MCU to actually use the Space Stone (chronologically), or any of them presumably.

1 Steve Rogers When He Returned The Stones To The Past

Steve getting on the platform to return the Stones to the past

Hopefully one day Marvel will give fans the rumored Disney+ series that highlights Cap's adventures through time and space to return the Stones to their rightful locations. Though until that day comes, simply knowing that he went to the past will have to be enough.

Steve may not have used the Space Stone, but he does carry it back in time with him. He also presumably reverts it back to its Tesseract state (likely with the help of the Time Stone), but again, until the story is formally told, fans will just have to guess.
