Sony Pictures just added another major Mattel property to its slate: Deadline reports the studio, which is also working on Masters of the Universe, convinced the toymaker to sell the film rights to the doll, with the aid of a clever concept that will be fleshed out by screenwriter Jenny Bicks (Rio 2, What a Girl Wants).
Instead of focusing on Barbie’s longtime beau Ken and her clothes-filled dreamhouse, the Sony project will shine the spotlight on the dozens and dozens of jobs Barbie has held down over the years. “It allows the character Barbie to use her personal and professional skills to step into the lives of others and improve them, almost like a modern-day Mary Poppins,” Deadline wrote.
Mattel introduced Barbie in 1959, and the doll has been going strong every since, wracking up a number of friends, sisters, pets, vehicles and houses. The character, who was most recently seen on the big screen in Toy Story 3, also appears in the CG webseries Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse.
