Sonic the Hedgehog 2 follows the events of the 2020 film and will introduce Knuckles, along with Tails, the latter of which appeared during a post-credits scene in the original film. Clips and posters for the upcoming film have already teased a number of references to SEGA's video game franchise, including Robotnik's giant robot form and the Chaos Emeralds. The official synopsis of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 confirms the Chaos Emerald will drive the plot, as both Robotnik and Knuckles will seek it in their pursuit of power. It's unknown how and why Knuckles and Robotnik are partnered togethered, only that they will surprise Sonic while he's left alone at home. "After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations," the synopsis reads.

In addition to familiar characters, it is worth noting the designs used for Knuckles and Tails bear resemblance to Sonic himself, who essentially saw a design overhaul following widespread backlash to the initial look. The redesign forced a delay but was ultimately far better-received.

Sonic the Hedgehog opened to generally positive reviews from critics and audiences, who found the film to be a fun adventure overall, with many highlighting the performance of actor Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik.
