WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The High Republic #11-12 and Star Wars: Trail of Shadows #3, on sale now.

Throughout the second wave of the Star Wars: The High Republic subseries, one of the main dangers for the Jedi has been the Great Leveler, It is a beast under the control of Marchion Ro and the Nihil that feeds on fear and uses psychic attacks fueled by the dark side of the Force that can calcify its victims. Jedi Master Loden Greatstorm was the Great Leveler's first Jedi victim, but two survivors of the Leveler's second attack, Terec, and Ceret, showed that the Great Leveler might be defeated through the Jedi's connections with each other.

The Great Leveler's most recent attack occurred in Star Wars: The High Republic #11 (by Cavan Scott, Georges Jeanty, Carlos Lopez, Jesus Aburtov, Karl Story, Victor Olazaba, Mark Morales, VC's Travis Lanham). In the attack, Terec was the main victim, but the attack on Terec also affected their bond twin Ceret even though Ceret was in a different system. The attack left both twins partially calcified. They survived but fell into a hibernation trance that they have not awakened from. Notably, while in this trance, their fellow Jedi also could not sense them in the Force, which suggested that the Great Leveler's attacks also may sever Force connections.

While examining the partially calcified Terec and Ceret, Dr. Gino'le explains their condition to Keeve Trennis, Emerick Caphtor, Stellan Gios and Sian Holt in Star Wars: The High Republic

In the third issue of the Star Wars: The High Republic: Trail of Shadows miniseries (by Daniel José Older, Dave Wachter, Giada Marchisio, Ian Herring, VC's Joe Sabino), Dr. Gino'le confirmed two key facts about the attack: the Great Leveler uses the Force as a conduit for its attacks, and Terec and Ceret survived only due to their connection with each other. The confirmation of the reason for Terec and Ceret’s survival offered a possible way for the Jedi to defend themselves against the Great Leveler in the future. If other Jedi can form similar bonds, they may be able to mitigate the damage from the Great Leveler's future attacks.

If these connections could save the Jedi, Avar Kriss could be instrumental in the Jedi's survival. Throughout the High Republic subseries, Avar has been particularly skilled with bringing Jedi together through what she perceives as their “song” in the Force, but her struggles in the aftermath of the Great Leveler's attacks might be blinding her to this possible solution. In Star Wars: The High Republic #12 (by Cavan Scott, Karl Story, Carlos Lopez, George Jeanty, and VC's Ariana Maher), Avar began closing herself off from the other Jedi as she planned more proactive measures against the Nihil, to the increasing concern of her friends. However, with the support of her fellow Jedi, she may be able to figure out how to use her unique abilities to protect her fellow Jedi from the Great Leveler and suffering Loden Greatstorm's fate.

Therefore, while Terec and Ceret remained in a hibernation trance, their survival provided key information to the Jedi. Their sacrifice may show a way that the Jedi might survive the Great Leveler's attacks in the future. While other Jedi would probably not be able to form as deep of a bond as Terec and Ceret, they could connect through the Force in order to diffuse the Great Leveler’s attacks and prevent the Leveler’s victims from turning to dust. Avar currently struggles with the aftermath of the Great Leveler's attacks, but she may be a key component to using the song of the Force to connect her fellow Jedi and protect them from the Nihil leadership's future plans for the Great Leveler and its unquantifiable horror.
