The future looks less bleak for women in the first trailer for the Hulu original series "The Handmaid's Tale," based on the groundbreaking speculative fiction novel by Margaret Atwood.

Not much about the story is given away in the trailer, however it comes with a synopsis for the series:

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, "The Handmaid's Tale" is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values'. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

We get a few glimpses of Elisabeth Moss as Offred, along with some shots of the theocratic authoritarian vision of the future, complete with ominous black military vehicles, ritualistic indoctrination, and brutal forms of corporal punishment and abduction. All of this is set to a decaying backdrop to reinforce the feeling that the world all around its inhabitants is dying, and women are merely another resource to prolong the cycle of control and violence.

Since its publication in 1985, Atwood's novel has been the subject of much acclaim and won several awards, including a Nebula and Booker prize. "The Handmaid's tale" has been adapted to film, radio and the stage, however this is the first time it's been made into a television series. Atwood serves as a consulting producer on the project, which was written by "The 100's" Bruce Miller.

"The Handmaid's Tale" premieres April 26 on Hulu.
