Snark Free Corner for Christmas Eve

Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!

Enjoy!

SNARK FREE EXCEPTION!

I have, in the past, complained about a specific plot device that I see used far too often in serialized fiction, which is the “Oh, but maybe it WAS ____” bit. I recently wrote about it after seeing a few Magnum PI episodes in a row (from the early years), and they used this device what seemed like every other episode.

To wit, “There are no such thing as Tiki gods,” and a rational explanation is given for the events, but then, at the end, something happens that makes the characters say, “Oh, but maybe it WAS a Tiki god!!”

Or, similarly, “There are no such thing as ghosts,” and a rational explanation is given for the events, but then, at the end, something happens that makes the characters say, “Oh, but maybe it WAS a ghost!!”

I think this is not a great plot device, but I will make a SNARK FREE EXCEPTION for one usage of this device – I don’t mind it when it shows up in Christmas stories, like the JLA issue where Plastic Man teams up with Santa Claus…

Plastic Man is telling Woozie Winks’ nephew a story of Santa Claus teaming up with the Justice League, but little Weezer doesn’t believe him – until Santa Claus shows up himself!!

Now PLASTIC MAN is puzzled – Santa Claus IS real?

But a rational explanation is given – Martian Manhunter was nearby, and pretended to be Santa Claus.

But then we see the REAL Santa Claus watching!!

Cute.

Any other good examples of this Christmas plot device you can think of in comics?

COVER THEME GAME

As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

Good luck! A cool point to the first person to figure it out!
