Snark Free Corner for 8/6

Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!

Enjoy!

COOL COMIC THING

One of the coolest things in comics is the whole idea of mismatched duos.

It is always fun to look back at “classic” duos and realize how their partnerships really didn’t make too much sense at the time, only in retrospect.

Like Green Lantern and Green Arrow.

They were in the Justice League together for years without the two being an actual pair, until Denny O’Neil figured they’d make a good team.

And you know what, he was right!!

Green Arrow and Green Lantern at least had the “Green” thing going – Blue Beetle and Booster Gold really had NOTHING in common when they were on the Justice League together, except for the fact that they were both pretty much broke.

That, in and of itself, was enough to throw the two men together, but their friendship and amusing banter made the “Blue and Gold” team a real treat for readers.

Like Green Arrow and Green Lantern, Fire and Ice have the name connection, but before Keith Giffen and JM DeMatteis added them to the Justice League (basically because they needed SOME female characters, and the DC Universe was sadly pretty sparse at the time), they were merely background Global Guardian characters.

Under Giffen and DeMatteis, this pairing of the free-spirited Fire with the old-fashioned Ice made quite the impression with fans.

Over at Marvel, you don’t get much more mismatched than Beast and Wonder Man, but the two bonded over the fact that they were both single male Avengers, and soon they had a very strong bond, strained only by the fact that Beast is sorta needed in the X-Men titles…

Otherwise, I bet the two would be paired up more often. Heck, they even had their own MINI-SERIES together!!

Mismatched duos – a cool comic thing.

Name some other neat mismatched comic book duos!

COVER THEME GAME

As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

Good luck! A cool point to the first person to figure it out!

What two current disparate heroes do you think would make a good mismatched duo?

THE COVER GAME

This week’s game is as follows…

Find me a cover that features Aquaman on the cover as the sole Justice Leaguer present, but is not one of Aquaman’s actual comic books (or a comic starring Aquaman, like Showcase or Adventure Comics).

Floating heads don’t count!

For example (and you can’t use this one!), this Justice League of America cover fits….

Remember, only one cover per commenter!

Good luck!
