“Smallville,” the new television show based on the life of a young Clark Kent, debuted on the WB Network in the U.S. Tuesday night with outstanding results.
A lot is riding on this series which will likely become the focus point for the youth oriented WB network after the losses of “Buffy” and “Roswell” to rival network UPN. “Smallville” performed more than admirably in its Tuesday night debut. According to the Hollywood Reporter “Smallville” delivered the strongest numbers for a series debut in the seven-year history of the network, bringing in an average of 8.4 million viewers, enough to top ABC and FOX in the 9-10pm time slot.
The show also did very well in those key demographics of young viewers delivering the network’s best-ever numbers in adults 18-34 (4.5 rating/12 share), men 18-34 (5.0/14) and men 18-49 (3.9/10). “Smallville,” which actually ran from 9-10:10 p.m., also took the No. 1 spot in the WB’s target demos of teens, female teens and persons 12-34.
“Smallville” runs Tuesday nights from 9-10pm on the WB Network.
