Stephen King is the gift that just keeps on giving to Hollywood. While adaptations of his short stories and novels have been hit or miss, studios continue to mine his oeuvre for more projects to translate from printed page to silver screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest project is based on King's 1984 short story "Gramma," which first appeared in an issue of Weirdbook magazine in before being reprinted in the Skeleton Crew short story collection.

The project has been renamed Mercy after the title character, a grandmother of two boys who happens to be a witch. The children's mother picks up on the clues and gets increasingly worried. Frances O'Connor (A.I.) is set to star as the mother. Matt Greenburg (1408, Reign of Fire) is working on the script for Peter Cornwell (The Haunting in Connecticut) to direct.

Jason Blum, the brain behind such low-budget, high-earning horror films as Paranormal Activity and Sinister, optioned the project for his own Blumhouse Productions along with Universal. This news comes just after announcing that the Sinister team will handle another King short story, "The Breathing Method."

This will actually be the second adaptation of "Gramma." The first came as a 1986 episode of the revived Twilight Zone written by none other than Harlan Ellison.
