While Simon Pegg helped write the script that became "Star Trek Beyond," Paramount Pictures announced a while back that he would only be returning to play Scotty for the fourth film in the rebooted franchise, with writing duties handed off to J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Earlier this week, however, Pegg tweeted out a photo that's got fans wondering if the studio has had a change of heart as to who will pen the upcoming sequel.

The photo features the veteran sci-fi and comedy actor hunched over computers alongside Doug Jung -- who just so happened to also co-write and play a role in "Beyond" -- while a Bad Robot figurine sits nearby. "Today..." reads the caption, fueling speculation that the pair may actually be authoring the next Trek movie, contrary to prior news.

Official channels have neither confirmed or denied the pair's involvement in writing the script, so who knows what the picture really entails. Could Pegg and Jung be working on a "Star Trek 4," or maybe even a new film produced by Bad Robot? Or maybe the pair just wanted to show off their new MacBooks. In any case, the Internet will continue to speculate away until more info trickles in on the film, which has yet to secure a release date or a proper title.

Fans wanting something a little more concrete can check out "Star Trek Beyond," starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban, on Digital HD, Blu-Ray and DVD now.
