After countless rumors that saw actors like Brad Pitt and Daniel Day-Lewis rumored for the role, the search to find Moriarty is over — and the selected actor is nothing short of a Mad man.
In the end, Warner Bros. and director Guy Ritchie have apparently settled on a lesser known character actor than Pitt or Day-Lewis, choosing actor Jared Harris for the role of Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes 2. The actor, currently starring in AMC’s Mad Men as British advertising executive Lane Pryce, is the son of the late Richard Harris.
Latino Review first reported the news of Harris’ casting, which was later echoed by Deadline. The studio has yet to issue an official confirmation, but if Harris is going toe-to-toe with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in the Holmes sequel, I have to tip my hat to the film’s casting directors — it’s a great fit for the actor and the franchise.
Harris joins a growing cast that includes the returning RDJ and Law as Holmes and Watson, as well as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace as a currently unnamed gypsy and V for Vendetta actor Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s brother.
