Shazam! was directed by David F. Sandberg. It opened in 2019 to positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, who praised the performances of its actor and its lighthearted tone-- a rarity at the time in the DC Extended Universe. Shazam grossed $366 million on a budget of approximately $100 million.

A sequel is currently in development. Details surrounding Shazam! Fury of the Gods are scarce, though it has recently been reported that actors Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu have  joined the cast as Hespera and Kalypso, respectively, the sequel's demi-god antagonists. The sequel has announced in 2019 but has faced a number of delays due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In January, it was reported that filming for the Shazam! sequel was scheduled to begin filming in spring.

Zack Snyder's Justice League was released on HBO Max in March after more than a year of post-production work and several years of fan petitions. Demand for Zack Snyder's version of Justice League grew in response to the mixed reception of director Joss Whedon's 2017 release of Justice League. After details of Snyder's original vision for the film came into light, fans began the #ReleasetheSnyderCut online movement on the basis that the film generally only required post-production work.

The director's cut of Justice League has a runtime of roughly four hours and features new characters and storylines, including Darkseid, Joker, Martian Manhunter and more. Snyder revealed that there were plans to include Jon Stewart's Green Lantern, played by actor Wayne T. Carr, but the character was cut at the behest of the studio and replaced with Martian Manhunter.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars Zachary Levi as Shazam, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Marta Milans as Mama Rosa, Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso and Rachel Zegler in an undisclosed role. The film arrives in theaters June 2, 2023.
