America has spoken and they've said, "We want movies about foul-mouthed teddy bears!" Seth MacFarlane's Ted, the story of a man (Mark Wahlberg) and his toy-brought-to-life-who-still-lives-with-him-as-an-adult raked in $54.1 million dollars this weekend for Universal, surpassing all industry expectations and easily taking the top spot.

Its closest competition was Steven Soderbergh's male stripper movie Magic Mike which earned about half of its $39.2 million on Friday. Still, despite trailing off fast after its opening day, the Channing Tatum/Matthew McConaughey film held on to the number two spot for for Warner Bros., outperforming last week's winner Disney/Pixar's Brave, Tyler Perry's latest Madea's Witness Protection and Madagascar 3, which pulled in $34 million, $26.4 million and $11.8 million respectively.

Sony's Amazing Spider-Man is expected to dominate the box office this week with it's Tuesday, July 3rd opening leading into a holiday weekend, giving people more time to go to the movies. It will have some competition thanks to the Thursday-release Katy Perry: Part of Me and Oliver Stone's star-studded crime drama Savages which comes out on Friday, but should still handily take the top spot.
